Are you passionate about shaping world-class trails and working outdoors in some of the most scenic locations across the United States? IMBA Trail Solutions is seeking a driven and experienced Trail Solutions Handcrew.
Position Summary
Execute trail construction projects that inspire and connect communities. This is a construction-based, year-round, hourly paid position responsible for assisting IMBA Trail Solutions with mountain bike trail construction and operational duties. This is a hands-on, field-based role ideal for a motivated individual who thrives in outdoor environments and has a strong background in trail building.
As a Trail Solutions Handcrew you will have the opportunity to build a wide variety of projects from carving singletrack in alpine forests to shaping jump lines in Appalachian clay, building urban bike parks to blazing trails in Nevada's backcountry—our work spans the full spectrum of terrain and creativity. As part of our construction team, you’ll travel across the country, immersing yourself in ecosystems and communities that most people only dream of experiencing. This position involves extensive travel (approximately 10 months a year) across diverse landscapes. During travel, all lodging, meals and incidentals (M&IE), mileage, and airfare are covered. You'll work closely with Trail Solutions staff, subcontractors, and clients to bring exceptional trail projects to life.

This is a remote-based position with regular and extended travel across the United States required.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform manual labor for 45+ hours per week in demanding outdoor environments.
- Build sustainable, innovative, and high-quality mountain bike and shared-use trails.
- Design and construct trails and features according to project specifications and client expectations.
- Provide regular project status updates to the Trail Solutions Director of Construction and Operations and Trail Solutions Construction Project Manager.
- Inspect work for quality and ensure compliance with contract terms and technical requirements.
- Manage and coordinate the delivery and staging of materials to meet project needs.
- Adapt to diverse work settings, including both remote backcountry and urban trail construction sites.
- Commit to extended travel for the duration of assigned projects, often in varying environmental conditions.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in construction, ideally within outdoor infrastructure or trail building projects.
- Understanding of construction processes, means, and methods.
- Familiarity with construction management software platforms.
- Strong communication, and personnel management abilities.
- Ability to think strategically and maintain a big-picture focus while managing day-to-day operations.
- Skilled in conflict resolution and crisis management.
- Effective time and resource management skills with a focus on efficiency.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively—approximately 10 months per year (March–mid December) with a week off in between projects. Approximately 4 to 5 additional weeks off a year.
- Hands-on mountain biking experience is essential, with intermediate to advanced riding skills preferred.

- Maintain a professional, positive, and proactive representation of IMBA in all client and partner interactions.
Experience & Certifications
- Demonstrated experience in trail construction and maintenance, with a clear understanding of sustainable trail building practices—across diverse terrain and project conditions.
- Background in the mountain biking and cycling industry is required.
- Strong technical mountain biking skills preferred, including the ability to ride technical and jump trails.
- Ability to interpret and execute both verbal and written instructions from clients, project managers, and IMBA leadership.
- Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills—both verbal and written.
- Customer-service focused with a professional demeanor in all interactions.
- Mechanically inclined with experience in preventative maintenance of small engines and construction tools.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- This position requires a high level of physical fitness, stamina, and comfort with outdoor work in remote and rugged environments.
- Frequent exposure to all weather conditions: heat, humidity, cold, wind, rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
- Regularly work outdoors for extended periods (10+ hour days) with limited access to conventional facilities.
- Extensive travel by vehicle and air is required; overnight and multi-week trips are frequent.
- Daily physical activity includes walking, hiking (1–5 miles/day frequently; up to 12 miles occasionally), crouching, lifting, and operating equipment.
- Regular lifting of up to 25 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50–100 lbs.
- Required to operate near heavy machinery and moving mechanical parts.
- Occasional mountain bike trail rides of 20+ miles per day.
- Use of specialized equipment: chainsaws, blowers, OHVs, dirt bikes, GPS units, clinometers, hand/power tools, and mountain bikes.
- Noise levels on job sites can be high and may require hearing protection.
