The Position: Outdoor Leader
Instructor: (Day & Multi-Day Instructors needed) Staff hired at an entry-level position. New instructors are generally paired with Lead Instructors who are familiar with TMW’s style, program sites, and instructional techniques. New instructors also have the opportunity to participate in many valuable field-related trainings, many leading to a certification.
The Mountain Workshop field leaders are responsible for safely co-leading school aged children and teens. Successful candidates will be at least 21 years of age (Specialist positions are 18 years and up), possess some outdoor adventure experience as well as a strong enthusiasm for the outdoor adventure and for mentoring children and young adults.
TMW field-staff work hard, often with long days, challenging overnights, and full seasons of work. The job requires field-staff to be flexible, communicate well with others, have enthusiasm towards outdoor adventures, and most of all patience! You may also find yourself leading trips in some of the most spectacular wilderness settings in the Northeast, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Making even the hardest day at work, well worth the amazing experience.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include teaching, leading or participating in some or all of the following activities:
Flat Water canoeing

White-Water Rafting
Sailing
Rock climbing & rappelling
Caving
Challenge courses, high and low ropes facilitation
Public speaking
Horse-Packing
Map & compass, orienteering
Mountain biking, bike touring
Nature study
Service Projects
Backcountry cooking
Leadership skills
Hiking, backpacking
Camp-craft, survival skills, and group debrief
Additional duties include driving 12-15 passenger vans and/or shuttle buses often with boat trailers, transporting participants and equipment, completing comprehensive trip reports, assisting with packing, unpacking, organizing and cleaning of equipment, before and after all programs.
Staff are hired based on their judgment, teaching skills and experience, enthusiasm, ability to learn, outdoor technical skills, group management and facilitation skills. Candidates must demonstrate some experience in the outdoors as a pre-requisite.
Programs:
• Schools Outdoors Program: K-12 Day and overnight trips that run in the spring and fall in CT. and NY.
• Awesome Adventure Day Trips: In summer we work with local youth ages 8-17 yrs-old. Programs are 1 week in length and are Monday-Friday.
• Trailmark Wilderness Expeditions: Expeditions are 7-21 day, sleep-away trips for ages 11-17 yrs-old.
Qualifications:
• Experience working with youth and/or personal outdoor knowledge
• You must be 21 years of age to apply for an Instructor position
• You must have a clean driving record. (DMV & Criminal background check will follow interview)
• New hires must attend Schools Outdoors and Awesome Adventures trainings.
• The Mountain Workshop’s current minimum first-aid standard is: Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer CPR, Wilderness First-aid, and Lifeguard training. (These certifications will be offered “free of charge” for employees who commit to the 2010 season.)

Educator/Guide positions are:
• At-will, seasonal employment.
• Industry competitive Per-Diem rates based on education, seniority and field experience.
